Deputy Governor’s father,80, kidnapped in Cross River State

Palpable fear now grips residents of Creek town in Odukpani local government area of Cross River as the father of the state Deputy Governor, Etubom Essien Effiok Cobham, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

Etubom Cobham, a member of Obong of Calabar Etubom Traditional Council, is said to be in his early 80s and a retired police officer.

This is barely two months after HRH Etubom Nyong Okon, another clan head from the same Bakassi, and a businessman were kidnapped by gunmen in Akpabuyo axis and released after the family had paid a ransom.

An eye-witness account revealed that the incident took place on Friday between 12 and 3:00am, barley 24 hours after the Deputy Governor’s father returned from routine medical check up from the University of Calabar teaching Hospital, UCTH.

The account said, “The gunmen came with a security dog and as they arrived, they moved up to the market square and headed straight to the residence of the surviving elder brother of Director-General of State Security Services, Chief Asuquo Aka.

“There, they burst into the Chief wife’s room and were shocked the man was not around. Apparently disappointed that they did not see the man, they destroyed his Toyota Camry car and took his wife and the house help away.”

Continuing, the account further said, “From there, they dashed over to the compound of Deputy Governor’s father, Etubom Essien Effiok Cobham, located within a walking distance. He is the clan head of Mbarakom community.

“They tried to enter the compound through the main door, but the door was too strong. So they broke into the house through the wall. But while a group was on the Deputy Governor’s father’s house, another group was operating on the nearby compound owned by Chief Okokon Quarmina, a nephew of Chief Cobham, seen as the traditional prime Minister of the community. As the operation was going on, their security dogs were barking just as they were shooting sporadically.

“And as fate would have it, in the bid to get the Deputy Governor’s father out of the house, the kidnapped Asuquo’s wife and the house help escaped through the bush.”

Piqued that the duo had escaped, the gunmen promptly kidnapped the Deputy Governor’s father and his nephew, popularly known as Baba Okon, to an unknown destination.

When SATURDY SUN visited the community which is about 10 minutes from Calabar metropolis through the Calabar water, some residents of the community who spoke on condition of anonymity,  said the gunmen numbering over 10 headed straight to the main beach where they parked their engine boat carrying two big horse power engines and zoomed off with their victims.

As they were moving, they said, they were consistently firing sporadically into the air to scare the natives away.

One of the residents, who simply gave his name as Emman, said “the community has never witnessed this magnitude of fire and gun power since the civil war ended.  I can tell you that the sounds of the guns are beyond AK 47 riffles.”

Emman further said “on landing at the beach, the kidnappers, well armed to the teeth, went straight to the youth leader’s house which is four poles away from the beach and riddled it with bullets.”

But the leader, Ita Eyo Okoko, was said to have escaped through the back door when he heard the sound of guns fired sporadically.

The Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the State  Police Command, Mr. John Umoh, confirmed the incident, saying that security operatives have been sent to the community to ascertain the extent of the damage.

At government House, Calabar, workers were seen in groups discussing the development while a few members of staff wore mournful look just as the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Efiong Okon, could not be reached for comment.

Pilot Insisted On Take-Off Despite Bad Engine Warning – AIB

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) probing the October third 2013 air crash involving an Associated Airlines plane has revealed that the aircraft took off with a faulty right engine.
The AIB made this known through a preliminary report on the accident which led to the loss of 15 lives.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, Commissioner in charge of accident investigation, Captain Mukhtar Usman stated that the investigation conducted on the cockpit voice and flight data recorders of the aircraft showed that the faulty engine was noticed shortly before take-off.
He also said that the insistence of the Pilot to fly the aircraft despite an automated warning from the on-board computer voice machine indicating that the take-off flaps were not in a correct position may have contributed to the crash.

Missing Female Abuja Lawyer Found Dead In Her Chambers

Police in Abuja are investigating the suspected murder of a female lawyer, Mrs. Ijeoma Micah, whose lifeless body was found mutilated, yesterday, in her chambers in the highbrow Maitama area of Abuja.

Ijeoma, the owner of Micah and Micah Chambers, was found dead in her office three days after she was said to have gone missing.

Her husband, who it was learnt, arrived from London on Sunday morning, rushed to her office, as it was gathered that he had not heard from her for three days, only to discover her lifeless body.

He reported the matter to Area Command of the police in Maitama.

Contacted on the development, Commissioner of Police FCT, Femi Ogunbayode, said that from investigations, it was discovered that some men had called Ijeoma to her office for some business, which she went for and afterwards, nothing was heard from her.

Ogunbayode told Vanguard that as a result of the killing, a security detail that was attached to Ifeoma was arrested and was being interrogated for alleged complicity.

He said that since the security detail did not report the case to the police until her husband came back from abroad and discovered her body, he was therefore a suspect.

He added that the Forensic Investigation Unit at the FCT Command was already at the office, where she was allegedly killed and had commenced investigation into the matter.

Sympathisers in the area said that the Ifeoma’s husband broke the door of her office and on seeing the lifeless body of his wife, almost killed himself while crying.

It was also gathered that Ijeoma’s car had been missing from the usual parking spot in front of her office building.

Police Nab Three Teenage Stowaways At Lagos Airport

The Airport Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested three teenagers for allegedly attempting to illegally board some international flights in Lagos.

Commissioner of Police for the command, Salahu Waheed, said the suspects, Lateef Popoola, 13; Amadi Joshua, 14; and Ukpabio Onyedikachi, 14, were arrested at different times at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.

Waheed, while handing over the suspects to their mothers, said there was a need for their respective state governments to rehabilitate them like the Edo State Government did with teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested on August 24, 2013 after sneaking into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane.

He said, “These boys were found at different times at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Their aim was to get into any plane and travel out of Nigeria.

“I decided to hand them over to their parents so they will be well taken care of and stop dwelling on the fantasy that you can just come into the airport, enter a plane and travel.

“Their state governments should try to rehabilitate them just like Edo State did for the stowaway in Benin.

“Lateef Popoola is from Ogun State; Amadi Joshua is from Ebonyi while Ukpabio Onyedikachi is from Abia State.

“The airport is not a place that you can just come into and travel. There are formalities. We don’t want to see these children here again.”

The teenagers, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, said they had been nursing the idea of travelling abroad, adding that they were not ready to execute their plans yet.

Lateef said he went to the tarmac to observe how aeroplanes take off and land.

He said he was able to gain access to the runaway by sneaking into an airport apron bus, but was arrested shortly after alighting.

He said, “I am not in school, I dropped out in Primary three. I was arrested last week Wednesday. I actually wanted to travel but I have yet to decided where I will go. So, I just went to the tarmac to see the aeroplanes.”

Lateef’s grandmother, Adunni, said she had no idea that her grandson was nursing the idea of travelling out of the country. She said she had been responsible for his upkeep since his mother abandoned him at infancy.

“I did not know that he wanted to travel. I just did not see him last week and I started looking for him all over the place. It was on Saturday that I finally found out that he had been arrested,” she said.

Onyedikachi and Joshua were said to have been arrested after asking some security agents where Malaysia flights were boarding.

After being questioned, the boys, who were both in SS1, said they had no travel documents and were immediately arrested.

Police said Onyedikachi’s brother was in Malaysia and it was possible that the teenager wanted to travel out to see his brother.

Onyedikachi, however said, “We were at the departure area of the airport. We did not attempt to travel out. We were just loitering and wanted to see the aeroplanes. We did not want to travel out on that day.”

Onyedikachi’s mother berated her son for his escapade. She said she had warned him and Joshua to be well behaved at all times.

She said, “I had no knowledge of what they did. Onyedikachi is well taken care of and is not suffering. I don’t know what pushed him to do this.”

Happy Independence Day Nigeria

Happy 53rd Independence day Nigeria! May God bless our Great Nation!!. May the Lord take this Nation to a greater height and make it a paradise on earth for every Nigerian. May their be an end to the killings, an end to Boko Haram, an end to bad government, an end to religious crisis. We say YES to a peaceful Nation. Amen! Happy independence day everyone!

President Jonathan's Independence Day Speech

Fellow Nigerians,

1. Today marks 53 years of our Independence as a nation. First and foremost, I would like to say congratulations to us all. Through thick and thin, we have built this country together. Through triumphs and trials, we have developed a Nigerian identity in our own way.

2. In truth, Nigeria is still a work in progress and we are challenged everyday to keep building in spite of the various obstacles that we face. Our strength has been in our diversity. If we look back over the years, we can say confidently that there is every reason to celebrate.

3. Today's Independence anniversary is unique because it is the last before we mark our centenary. On January 1, 2014, Nigeria will be 100 years old as a country, following the amalgamation of the Protectorates of Southern and Northern Nigeria in 1914.

4. Beloved country men and women, traditionally, the Presidential address on this symbolic day has served two purposes. It has, quite rightly, been used to remind all Nigerians about our heritage. It has also allowed my predecessors and I to comment on our stewardship to the nation and make political capital out of a state occasion.

5. But this year, I will not. Because, today of all days, we should not be scoring political points. On the contrary, in this last year of the first century of our Union, we should be addressing our future as a Nation and a people!

6. I admit that these may not be the best of times for our nation. Our people are divided in many ways – ethnically, religiously, politically, and materially. I cannot hide from this reality. I cannot hide from my own responsibilities.

7. As we prepare to mark the centenary, therefore, today offers us an opportunity to reflect on our long journey to nationhood and the progress we have made so far. Whatever the challenges that we may face, we have every reason to be proud of our national accomplishments; we have every reason to remain proud and optimistic. Our collective national journey has witnessed great watersheds, thanks to our spirit of endurance, perseverance and sacrifice. Getting the rest of the job done with determination and courage is just a matter of time. We are Nigerians, a nation of talented people, endowed with resources, potentials, and Divine Grace.

8. In our journey to greatness as a nation, we have built an economy that is robust and erected enduring infrastructure and institutions of democracy. Our social system is now more inclusive, open and compassionate. We are waging a steady battle against poverty, unemployment, and corruption. Our sense of community, solidarity and shared expectation is strong and capable of withstanding the present social, economic and political challenges that still confront us.

9. In saying this, I am reminded of the comments I made a week ago to a cross-section of Nigerians in New York during the 68th United Nations General Assembly. I declare now as I declared then: we have a duty as Nigerians, whatever may be our differences or prejudices, to always put Nigeria first.

10. Our politics should be an art of patriotic labour and selfless service to the community, particularly by the political elite who are placed in positions of great trust and responsibility. Politics has its own high moral principles which abhor distracting and divisive rhetoric. As men and women in leadership, we must continually focus on service, duty, responsibility, and the next generation. Those who are elected to govern at all levels must focus on improving the lives of our people, not selfish ambition.

11. In the words of the American theologian and author, James Freeman Clarke, ‘a politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation’. Whether we are Muslims or Christians; rich or poor; from the North or the South; East or West; regardless of our political affiliations, this is the time for every one of us to be a statesman!

12. My clarion call therefore, on this special day, is that we should begin to align our political utterances and conduct solely to the nobler passions that unite our people. Politicians do not make a nation; ordinary folks do.

13. Our nation is made great by the big and small efforts of regular citizens. These are the teachers and men and women in academics who inculcate the knowledge and wisdom that transform into tomorrow’s wealth; the traders and market women who tend to our everyday needs; the farmers whose labour feeds the nation; the artisans whose work ensures that our homesteads are well maintained; the doctors, pharmacists, nurses, accountants, bankers, engineers, and other professionals who add value to our lives; the sportsmen and women and those in the creative industry who bring honour and fame to our nation;

14. And the men and women of our armed forces and security services who toil day and night so that you and I may live in a safe and secure nation.

15. It is the individual and collective heroism of these regular folks that has placed our nation on the path of greatness. Politics and politicians sometimes distract the people and create unnecessary tension.

16. But our independence celebration is about the same people, the people of Nigeria: their industry, sense of mission and purpose, and their patience and perseverance as we navigate historical turns in our march towards prosperity and self-sufficiency. Today, I salute the people of Nigeria.

17. My Compatriots, history has proven that nations take time to evolve. We should rejoice in our democracy because it enables us to be united by our differences, not destroyed by them. And, there is no more crucial time for us to be united than now.

18. The threats we face may be real and immediate. But we are not alone in this regard. It is a difficult season for much of the world: industrialized or developing; rich or poor. What matters are the lessons we learn, the wisdom we demonstrate, and the victory we snatch from the jaws of likely defeat.

19. And I tell you, more than anything else, there are lessons to learn, and every cause to be thankful. If I must cite one example, take Syria. As we all pray and work for a return to normalcy in Syria, it would be helpful for us to reflect on the fact that Syria was once a peaceful, thriving, multi-cultural nation which played host to a mosaic of religions and ethnicities.

20. But that once idyllic nation has today become a theatre of human misery of unimaginable proportions as a result of the activities of extremist forces.

21. Fellow Nigerians, the spectre of extremism haunts every democracy in every corner of the globe. While we celebrate our independence and good fortune, our hearts must grieve for those who have lost loved ones in numerous terrorist activities around the world.

22. Back home, I admit being overtaken by deep feelings of grief, whenever news reached me of the appalling atrocities in some of our States, especially the North Eastern part of our country. Just two days ago, terrorist elements attacked the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State killing a number of innocent students of the institution and other residents in cold blood, most of them in their sleep.  This act of barbarism is a demonstration of the extent to which evil forces will go to destabilize our nation. But I assure you, they will not succeed.

23. My heart goes out to the families of all those who have fallen victim of these dastardly acts. Our Administration will not rest until every Nigerian is free from the oppression of terrorism. I reassure you that no cost will be spared, no idea will be ignored, and no resource will be left untapped in the quest to enable our people live without fear.

24. On this day, I implore every Nigerian – wherever you are, whatever language you speak, whatever your religious persuasion, whichever Political Party you support -: let us join together to fight this evil of extremism.

25. On behalf of us all, I commend our Armed Forces and security agencies for their dedication and bravery in the face of grave danger, and in the name of our collective liberty.

26. Fellow Nigerians, this is a time to pull together behind the national cause: the cause of our freedom, and our future. We must rekindle the spirit of Nigeria, to ensure that every democrat and every lover of peace in this great nation continues to live in a free, peaceful, and secure Nigeria.

27. On my part, I re-dedicate myself completely to the service of this great country. I was elected President to continue the process of building a prosperous nation where hopes, dreams and aspirations would be fulfilled. Nigerians, home and abroad, want a country they can be proud to call their own.  I am pleased to affirm that, no matter the challenges we face, we are on the right path to greatness. Our Transformation Agenda, which is part of the overall vision of making Nigeria a land of greatness, has been delivering positive and encouraging results.

28. On May 29th this year, I presented to the nation a mid-term report of my Administration’s Transformation Agenda. This was conceived as an integrated policy aimed at reconstructing not only institutional governance for effective and efficient service delivery, but also a re-orientation of national norms and values.  The document captured the essence of our agenda in relation to core objectives and achievements.

29. I have been consistently mindful of the weight of public expectation to find solutions to the challenges that confront us because the mandate we have is a free and sacred one. In all that I have done, I have been guided by this sacred obligation, to work hard for the good of Nigeria and to make life better for Nigerians. I want to assure everyone that Nigeria, under my leadership, will not fail.

30. Exactly 53 years ago today, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa urged us to ‘move with quiet dignity to our place on the world stage’. I am sure that there have been times when every one of us must have questioned how closely we have followed that injunction.

31. But again, I can reassure you that Nigeria’s place on the world stage today is strong and safe, and it is certainly a place of dignity and respect. We must continue to build on this by remaining a nation and a people committed to ideals, the noblest humanitarian values, and the rule of law.

32. Our Constitution is anchored ultimately on the idea of freedom and fundamental rights: freedom of expression; freedom from discrimination; freedom to vote and be voted for, and the right to human dignity. These are the core values of a true democracy. These are the values of which we must never lose sight.

33. In my address to the UN General Assembly last week, I emphasized the crucial role of democratization in improving the fortunes not just of this country, but of our entire continent. Democratic values encourage diversity. They encourage discourse. They encourage disagreement. This is the joy of democracy.

34. It enables us to have an opinion. And ultimately, the ballot box gives us all the opportunity to instigate change. When democracy works, it does not destroy a nation. It unites and defines it.

35. Fellow Nigerians, our Administration has taken cognizance of suggestions over the years by well-meaning Nigerians on the need for a National Dialogue on the future of our beloved country. I am an advocate of dialogue. When there are issues that stoke tension and bring about friction, it makes perfect sense for the interested parties to come together to discuss.

36. In demonstration of my avowed belief in the positive power of dialogue in charting the way forward, I have decided to set up an Advisory Committee whose mandate is to establish the modalities for a National Dialogue or Conference. The Committee will also design a framework and come up with recommendations as to the form, structure and mechanism of the process.

37. The Committee will be chaired by Dr. Femi Okurounmu while Dr. Akilu Indabawa will serve as the Secretary. The full membership of the Committee will be announced shortly.

38. I expect the Report to be ready in one month, following which the nation will be briefed on the nomenclature, structure and modalities of the Dialogue.

39.  Fellow Nigerians, the past 53 years have seen Nigeria evolve on an epic scale.  Our progress since independence has not always been smooth. This is, after all, our Fourth Republic; but despite all its flaws, it has lasted longer than all the previous three put together. That is progress and it proves that, our differences – real and imagined - notwithstanding, we are, in every sense, a united nation.

40. This is no time for the harmful clutches of parochial sentiments and the politics of bitterness, impunity, arrogance and unhelpful indiscipline. We must stand as one, with absolute commitment and resolve to resist any force that threatens us and the sanctity of our union.

41. I want to thank all our country men and women who have stood by this Administration in the midst of mounting challenges and enormous expectations.

42. I recognize that it is not easy to keep believing in the possibilities of our greatness when our faith is constantly challenged. But let me assure you that, if we do not despair, we shall reap the reward of our labour in due season.

43. It is my prayer that, another 53 years from now, our children and grand-children will look back on our effort and be thankful that we kept the faith.

44. May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

45. I wish you all a very happy 53rd Independence Celebration.

46. I thank you.

Late Prophet Ajanaku's Close Aide Speaks…He Was A Liar, Cheat, Swindler & Adulterer

From Encomium Weekly Magazine;

Another shocking revelation has surfaced on the late Prophet Ireti Ajanaku. One of his close aides who worked for him for five years, Emmanuel Olasemeji who is a furniture maker,  opened up to Encomium Weekly on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, on the late Prophet he knew…

How did you become one of late Prophet Ajanaku’s aides?

The first day I saw him, I was not attracted to him because of his physical look. He bleached. However, when my boss who was one of his church members introduced me to him, he prayed for me. My decision to visit his church was based on curiosity. That was in 2007. Sincerely, there is no way you won’t marvel at his preaching. He preached with persuasive and authoritative words.

I was wowed. And that was when he was about completing his multi-million naira mansion. And most of the church members volunteered to assist the builders. He asked me to work for God in his house and do the furniture. I can’t lie to you, when Prophet Ajanaku spoke you would think it was God. His church members saw him as god. He often told us that he wines and dines with God and that if he wants anybody to die tomorrow, it would happen. We all respected and feared him. You dare not say no to his request.

He said he had the power to save someone from ultimate death. My decision to open up was not to malign his character but be factual. Even before his death, I confessed this feat openly to him. I can’t doubt his power but not as a Christian. For instance, someone came to see him. He said some people predicted he was going to die at a certain date. Thus, he was warned not to go out. Prophet Ajanaku closed his eyes for a minute and the next moment said the man should go out that day that nothing would happen to him. And nothing happened to him indeed.

I can say that though he was very powerful but his lifestyle and character were questionable.

How many months did you work in his house?

I stayed inside his house for nine months to complete the whole job. The reason was that most of the job was done at night. He won’t allow you to work on the upper parts of the house during day time until he gave you the nod. And mostly at night. If you complained that it would disturb people staying with him, he would say as the owner, all I needed was his approval.

How would you describe him?

Although he wielded spiritual power but he was not a man of God. The bubble burst some years back when one of his personal aides, Mr. Adefeso traveled with him to South Africa on a missionary assignment. The aide is quite educated. He is an elderly person. That was in November 2010. And there is one thing about prophet, whenever he is angry with anybody, he would tell the church members that God is angry with such person and that anybody that relates with such a person would incur the wrath of God.

Thus, once you incur his wrath, the whole church would stop greeting you. Before they travelled to South Africa, there was an issue on ground. He was renovating the church. He engaged the services of one of his church members who sold woods and planks to supply the church.

I supervised the project and it was N750,000. He was to pay after the project. After the project, he refused to pay. And the member knew it wrecked his small business. It became an issue and it was his personal aide, Mr. Adefeso who waded in and said prophet would pay. That was when they travelled to South Africa. When they got back, we discovered they had an issue.

The aide claimed he discovered some of his secrets while on the trip but till date refused to disclose them. However, when prophet came back, he quickly started telling us the man was evil, that we should excommunicate him. I know him well, once he knew you had discovered some of his negative acts, he would blackmail you with lies. That was the same thing he did for Tope Alabi.

What are the things you discovered about him?

First, he is a chronic liar. Do you know that the money he owed he never paid back? The matter was taken to the police at Panti and he denied owing the man. He said he has paid him. I was shocked. They called me as a witness. Though I was scared but I stood for the truth. He spent over N500,000 to settle the case. And at the end we even became the victim. He specialized in turning the tide against people who speak the truth.

He would fabricate lies against such person. And the medium he used most was a soft-sell magazine. Second, I can tell you authoritatively that he sleeps with his female aides who stay in his house. He has agents who recruit ladies in the church who are not employed.

They used their situation to entice them to work and live with the prophet. And some only live with him for like three months before he would fabricate lies against them and send them parking. But none of them could disclose their ordeal because he was a god.

But what about his wife?

His wife, Joy, was staying in the upper room. She only comes down during church services. That’s why most people don’t really know anything about her. She dares not come down unless he gave approval.

We only discovered the truth when one of the ladies who was also the wife’s aide known as Becky confessed to a pastor at Abuja that he was  sleeping with her. She was dating a friend of mine who was also staying in his house. The house is so big and many of us lived with him. My friend and Becky travelled to Abuja and he introduced her to a pastor in Abuja. That one now said Becky has a secret and unless she revealed it, it would affect their relationship. It took her four days to open up that she has been sleeping with late Ajanaku. She was scared she would die after the confession but with prayer in Abuja, nothing happened to her. Although we were suspicious but she gave us instances which we were aware of and revealed how other girls too were his sex slaves.

Also, most of his members go to the church with their wealth but left poor. He was very rich. He swindled them of their wealth and virtues.

Though we have never seen him with charm before but he often told us he knows about all incantations because he had been into all sorts of occultism before he started his ministry.

He said they are all powerless compared to God’s power. He is a pretender. Once he was about to discard his enemies, he would say negative things about them and since we were not privileged to see or hear from God, we believed him. That’s what he used on those girls too. He bleached and encouraged the girls too to use the cream. I had to leave in 2011. I spent five years with him.

Is it true that he once had a wife?

Yes. It’s no secret that he had a wife and two kids who died before he started the ministry. Aside that, he had a baby out of wedlock, but he rejected the mother.

What’s the woman’s name?

I don’t know because he was even the one who revealed it to us when the mother came to collect the boy’s allowance of N20,000. Only few aides knew. I was so close to him because I worked for him.

He had four rooms in that house which are exclusively his own. He had a particular room that if he was there for three months you won’t know.

On Friday, September 20, 2013, we contacted the ministry’s spokesperson, Tosin, over some of these allegations but he declined to make any comment. “Please, I have nothing to say.”

One-legged robber arrested in Delta State

A 21-year-old disabled armed robbery suspect, John Okue, has been arrested by the Delta state police command in a hair saloon in Okwashi-Uku, following a tip off.

The disabled robber, who lost one leg to a virus, led the gang of other brutal robbers whose ages ranged from about 17 to 25 years.

Together, they were said to have robbed, killed and raped their female victims with impunity.

The gang was said to be highly connected to top police officers in the state. Consequently, when any member of the gang was arrested and detained, his freedom was often obtained.
Okue and other gang members

Okue and other gang members

It was reliably gathered that at a point when the police wanted to apprehend him in his home in Kwale, he escaped while he disguised as a begger. The police officers detailed to track him down saw him but never knew he was the suspect they were looking for.

This cat and mouse game between the police and the armed robbery suspect continued for several weeks as he became elusive until recently when the gang leader was apprehended in a barbing saloon at Ogwashi-Uku following a tip-off.

Police sources said confessional statement by the gang leader led to the arrest of other members at different locations.

They are being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Asaba.

Among dangerous weapons recovered from the gang were battle axe, pump action, rifles, shot guns and AK 47 rifles.

Graphic photo: LAGBUS crushes soldier to death in Lagos

This horrible accident happened yesterday Monday Sept. 23rd along the Alaka/Costain crossover bridge in Surulere. The driver of one of the buses in the state mass transit scheme lost control of his bus and crashed into a soldier riding a motorcyle on the express. The yet-to-be identified soldier was cut almost into two by the bus. (Too graphic...but will show you just one pic).

According to a source who witnessed the accident, the driver was on top speed when he lost control of the vehicle as he approached a bad spot on the dilapidated bridge. The driver, while trying to avoid the bad spot, swerved to the left pinning the soldier on the railing of the bridge. The bus dragged the soldier for a bit and cut through his bowel.

Eyewitnesses said the soldier, who died on the spot, was carrying a woman on the back seat of the motorcycle, and was flung away from the impact of the collision. She survived the crash but is in a critical condition in the hospital. The driver of the bus fled the scene after seeing the extent of the damage and so did the passengers of the bus a few minutes later, fearing attack from soldiers.

See a pic after the cut. *Very graphic so be warned*

DJ Switch wins Glo X Factor!! Takes home 24 million Naira

The 29-year-old geology graduate of the University of Port Harcourt and native of Udi, Enugu State, was declared winner at the grand finale of the show held at Dream Studios, Bamako Street, Omole, Lagos. She beat the two other finalists Ethel Eshun and Vicky Gomoti in the last round of voting to win Globacom’s N24 million cash prize and a recording contract with Sony Music. Continue...

Before the announcement of the results, the expectation of audience, judges and contestants alike had built to a crescendo as everybody waited anxiously to find out who the first X Factor winner in Africa
would be.

The suspense was to last even longer as Glo ambassador from Ghana, Efya, came on stage for a wonderful performance that had the audience applauding rapturously. After her performance, X Factor host, Toolz, turned to the judges and sought to know how they felt about the night.

Reggie answered first, “I’m so excited that I brought my wife with me so we can both be excited together. It’s been a beautiful journey; I can’t wait to see who will walk away with the money.”

According to MI, “It’s been incredible. The crew, my fellow judges and the contestants have all been wonderful.”

Toolz asked Onyeka, “Who do you think will be the winner tonight?”
Onyeka answered with a smile, “I was so excited, I brought my Bible along with me. At this stage, I think the last three contestants have all won.”

Shortly afterwards, 2008 UK X Factor winner, delectable Alexandra Burke, got the hall on its feet with a resounding applause for a great performance of her hit track, Halleluyah. She was later joined on stage
by the three finalists, DJ Switch, Eshun and Vicky as they all spectacularly chorused the song together.

“Shake” and “Ada Ada” crooner, Flavour, came onstage next to thrill guests with a scintillating performance. He proved why he was a crowd favourite as the audience rose to their feet to dance along with him. After Flavour’s performance, the contestants came out to sing the songs they sang at the audition stage.

Vicky led the performances, and she got a standing ovation from the three judges. “How did your daughter perform?” Toolz inquired of Onyeka. “She has grown from a pupa to a butterfly. She sang with confidence and inner joy. I had goose pimples just listening to her. I have no doubt that she’ll make it. May God bless you.”

Reggie added, “You just proved to us that our work has not been in vain,” while MI said, “Wow, Vicky is just so amazing. You are absolutely stunning. The way you’re radiating joy; don’t keep it to yourself, please, share it with the world.”

DJ Switch came up next, garbed in a tight black trouser with black top to match. Her entry engendered a boisterous response from the crowd with her performance of Jay Z’s “Forever Young,” which was heavily
spiced up with raps. In a mild drama, the contestant switched over backwards, precariously clutching the mic as she raps. Her stagecraft even drew a wider applause when she stepped down the stage to hug her mother, while still singing without losing concentration.

Reacting to her performance, MI said, “Switch, people scream when you perform because you inspire us all. When you came for the audition, I felt you tried. I had already made up my mind that you wouldn’t make
it to my final three mentees, but you changed my mind. Everybody here needs to know that no matter what people say about you, it doesn’t matter as long as you fight.” he concluded. Reggie gushed, “DJ Switch, you are inspirational; you excite me. My children love you; everybody loves you!” As for Onyeka, she opined, “Unlike the other judges, the moment you stepped on stage, I knew you had it.”

When asked why she should win the X Factor, Switch simply said: “I work hard; I pray hard.”

Eshun was the next to perform, and she pulled out all the stops as she shimmered in her green attire. “One of the best things on this program is that I got to mentor Vicky and Eshun. She is exquisite, beautiful, gorgeous and talented. She walks onto the stage and lights it up. You have something that is very special. No matter what happens here, youhave me permanently in your camp. You will take the world by storm!” Onyeka declared.

MI said, “You are a perfect example of what this show is all about. You epitomises everything X Factor stands for. You’ve been one of my favourites.” Her Ghanaian compatriot, Reggie, said, “My story with my sister is different. We come from the same place and people expect me to give her a pass. It often seems as if I’m tough on you, but look at where you stand now. You have done well!”

On why she thinks she should win the competition, Eshun said, “The potter in the Bible goes around looking for clay to mold them into the type of pots that he wants. X Factor came looking for me; found me and I am glad. These past weeks, I have gone through moulding, and now, I’m ready.”

Then the climax! The contestants held hands together as they anticipated the results that would change the lives of one of them forever.

As Toolz invited the representative from Alexandra Forbes to the stage, she lingered a bit, teasing the audience as she twirled the green envelope containing the results in her hands.

“The first winner of the Glo X Factor West Africa is DJ Switch!” she announced as the crowd erupted in jubilation.

“How do you feel?” Toolz asked Eshum. She answered, “Fortunately, the Lord did what He wanted to do, and I’m happy for that.”

Vicky said, “I want to thank Glo for this platform, and I think DJ Switch deserved to win.”

Thereafter, DJ Switch performed her single, “Safe Landing” which is billed for release next week.

The first runner-up was Eshun and she got the sum of N1m for her efforts, while Vicky, the second runner-up, also got N1m.

Ghanaian poet and diplomat Kofi Awoonor, (pictured left) was among the 59 killed during the attack on Westgate Mall in Kenya yesterday. He was in Nairobi as a participant in the Storymoja Hay Festival, a 4-day celebration of writing, thinking and storytelling. The Ghanaian govt confirmed his death early Sunday morning. He was 78 years old. His son was also shot, but was not killed.
Also the president's nephew, Mbugua and his fiance Wahito (both pictured right) were killed in the attack yesterday.

Over 1,000 people have so far been evacuated from the mall, but an unknown number of hostages are still trapped inside with the terrorists believed to be about 15. Kenyan security forces have been locked in a standoff with gunmen since yesterday. Gun shots have been heard all morning in the area.

Heavily armed Islamic extremists pulled up in several cars yesterday and shot their way into the most upmarket shopping centre in Nairobi, ordering Muslims out if they could prove their religion by reciting a prayer or answering a question on Islam. They started killing those who failed the test.

Dejumo Lewis turns 70

I fell in love with the tube at a very tender age and one of my favourite programees was of course, the now rested TV drama series, Village Headmaster. When I gaze back in time I’m filled with nostalgia as I remember those happy evenings around prime time when my entire family sat in the family living room, savouring Nigeria’s longest running TV drama series; it was a family ritual.

And one of the characters whose voice always arrested my attention was Dejumo Lewis aka Kabiyesi. Wearing his beaded crown designed with adornments and flanked by servants tending to him as he presided over issues affecting his subjects in fictional Oja Village, Dejumo cut the image of a monarch who knew his onions.

Recently when the thespian and veteran cast of the now rested TV drama series clocked 70, I had the opportunity of meeting him one-on-one for the first time and have a chat with him. After a series of disappointments and postponements, I was finally at his office, located at Stadium Hotel, Lagos, one hot sunny afternoon.

His secretary had kept me waiting for a while so I put a call across to him announcing my presence. Before I could say Jackie Robinson, the man popularly known as Kabiyesi stormed into the reception, his voice booming like a canon with an admonitory tone as he addressed his secretary in Yoruba, ‘why didn’t you let him in?’

Obviously intimidated, the light complexioned secretary apologised profusely as she ushered me into his office. However, I had scarcely made it into his office when the angry face of the Oloja of Oja dissolved in a boyish grin as he pumped my hand in a firm handshake.

Indeed as the interview progressed, the thespian, broadcaster, movie maker and communications consultant who was born in 1943 in Lagos had a lot to say and he spoke with that same calm and reassuring voice that held me spell bound as a tot. As the interview kicked-off, he picked his words patiently.

Turning 70

Dejumo who turned 70 a while ago described clocking 70 as starting life all over again: “It gives me opportunity to count my blessing and review my life and to take concrete decisions as to the way forward and that’s what I have done and at the end of the exercise I felt on top of the world. I realized that whatever I had done, the best was yet to come. It feels great to be 70; I mean really really great!

“I realized that there seemed to be a jinx in my nuclear family. My first two brothers never lived up to 70. But now, my immediate elder brother is 72 and I am 70 so we seem to have broken the jinx if there indeed was a jinx; it really feels good and great,” he says with a jovial note in his voice as we both share a hearty laugh.

At 70, what is the secret to his youth? Where does he find the strength to carry on? He smiles as he responds bubbling with life and spreading his hands expansively as he replies declaring that whoever retires at the age of 70 is retiring to the grave!

“In the first place, I think it’s a very wrong notion for any able bodied person in any field of endeavour to retire at 70. Turning 70 for me is like starting a new life and that’s the truth. As a matter of fact, any active person who retires at the age of 70 wants to retire to the next world,” he adds as we both share another hearty laugh.

Happiest moment

70 years after, he says his happiest moment was the day he secured admission to the seminary in 1958 to train to be a Catholic priest at the age of 16 after he finished primary school. He says being a priest was a childhood dream which was born of a desire to correct the ills of society.

Recalling those early years Dejumo, who was his mum’s favourite child continued: “As I got into my teenage years it started getting worse. I saw so many inequalities and as a 15 year-old, I couldn’t understand why some people should live so well and have everything like my family while signs of poverty were everywhere and a lot of people had nothing so very quietly I developed that desire, that ambition to make a change.”

He said that when he finally finished primary school, his parent’s plan had been for him to follow in the family tradition and enroll at St Gregory’s College, Obalende. However, he broke the news to his mum that he wanted to be a priest.

“I don’t know where I got the courage from,” Dejumo recalled, “but I felt I just had to let them know what I really wanted. The family tradition had been to enroll at St Gregory’s College but the desire to be a priest was very strong. I was scared but I just had to let it go. The courage came from my spirit. When I told my mum I was frightened but she was overjoyed! And she said, ‘what did you just say,’ and then she did something that really surprised me. She danced and asked me, ‘do you mean it?’

“From there we went straight to Ebute Ero and she bought fresh fish and rice. I was very close to my mother and it was obvious that I was her favourite among my siblings. Whenever she wanted to spoil me it was with fresh fish and rice.

“She prepared me a special supper that night and the following morning we were in Ibadan and that was how I got into the seminary.”

However, 10 years later in 1968, just when he had finished his studies and was on the verge of ordination, he quit the seminary to the utter disappointment of his mum!

“She almost died and was withdrawn and sad. It got so bad one of my uncles had to intervene. He told her that ‘if you die, this boy will continue with his life. You better accept it. You didn’t send him but he told you he wanted to be a priest and you supported him but now he is saying he is no longer interested so just accept and support him.’ At the time I was already into drama and TV.”

Dejumo said the reason he quit was because after studying philosophy for so many years, he was compelled to start asking questions. However, he did not get satisfactory answers hence he quit the seminary.

Kabiyesi

The pioneer cast member of Village Headmaster disclosed that with his dreams for the priesthood buried, he had turned to his first love, the arts. That decision took him to the then Nigerian Television Service (NTS), where he auditioned for and got the role of Kabiyesi.

“Drama and music started from childhood but it was drama that I pursued more. Right from my primary school days I was involved. I was in the Drama Society and we organized performances. In Form Six I was Drama Prefect and that continued at the seminary. So it was logical after I left the seminary, acting would be the next thing for me.

“Village Headmaster started on NTS in 1968. It was like the Kabiyesi role was waiting for me because just as I was leaving the seminary I got the role. Village Headmaster ran for 22 years and I acted that role till it was rested. ”

Recounting how he got the role that was to transform him into a national icon, Dejumo said when he got to NTS, he met the producer who was one Sanya Dosunmu and told him about himself, informing him that he was fresh out of the seminary.

“ He was like ‘oh, we have another Ted Mukoro here.’ I got the role after an audition by the current Olowu of Owu, Oba Adesanya Dosunmu.  He gave me the script to read and the rest is history.”

Burden of stardom

Commenting on the challenges of acting Kabiyesi he said that the role got him so popular that at some point he couldn’t walk on the streets without getting mobbed.

“I was playing the role of an elder, a 65 year-old monarch but I was just 25 or 26. Initially many people did not recognize me except those who knew me. However, after a while it just went out of control and where ever I went people recognized me. I couldn’t even walk along the streets without getting mobbed.

“It was surprising because at that time I did not have a car. And I was jumping from bus to bus and people would speculate, ‘is that not him? No it’s not him. People thought that I was a real Oba even though I did not have the paraphernalia of office.

“My name changed to Kabiyesi. Even my mum started calling me Kabiyesi and it began to get to my head so I had to sit myself down and say to me, ‘don’t let this get into your head. It’s ephemeral; it’s just a phase. And from then on I was able to hold my own.”

However it was not over. His kids at school were being called princes and princesses and it was getting to their heads so he had to sit them down and give them a lecture on the true state of affairs.

Reconciliation

According to him, his success as Kabiyesi was what reconciled him to his mum who was broken hearted and wept when he left the seminary.

“In fact, that was what consoled my mum. Everybody was respecting her and calling her the mother of Kabiyesi.

“The climax was the day I went to see her and she was so excited! She said she didn’t know that what I was doing was so important to people. She told me how she was given special treatment at the post office after people on the cue and the cashier recognized her as Kabiyesi’s mother. From that day she became very happy with me. A lot of people had left the seminary and ended up outcasts. She was happy for me.”

Did he make money from his role as Kaniyesi?

“No I did not. When the Nigerian currency had value, the little you earned you could do something with but it couldn’t sustain the life style of a star. That was a challenge then and up till now. Today it’s only in the comedy industry that people are really making money. Every other artiste has something doing by the side whether legitimate or illegitimate.

“I challenge anybody to come out and contradict me. However, it opened doors. My name was getting things done for my friends and family. That was what I enjoyed. There was a day I went to buy a car after my first car was stolen. Back then there was a waiting period of six to 12 months. I had gone to pay part of the installment and the MD introduced me to a colonel in the Army. “As soon as the colonel knew who I was, he offered me his car which he had come to collect that very day and which was the same model as the one I had ordered for. He said that rather than having me wait, he would rather do the waiting because he appreciated what I was doing on TV so much. I left that day with my car; I was surprised.”

Marriage

Dejumo got married to his wife on April 18, 1970 and together they have several kids. However, he revealed that after 29 years of marriage, they parted ways and ever since he has remained single.

“If we were still together we would have celebrated our 43rd year. She moved out on October 9, 1999. I haven’t remarried formerly because in the Catholic Church you can’t remarry as long as your partner’s alive and that’s one of my criticisms of the church. This is because priests are supposed to be celibates and so they don’t have any idea of what marriage is except what theology or dogma tells them and that’s what they preach from the pulpit all the time.

“It’s totally wrong and if you apply for annulment it takes years. For a man who has been used to marriage and all the good things that marriage brings, it’s not easy. “How do you expect the man or woman to be celibate? By leaving the seminary in 1968 I had rejected celibacy so it’s wrong for the church to impose celibacy on me at my age. I consider it erroneous for the church to impose celibacy on me because I had rejected it in 1968 over 45 years ago.”

70 years after, is he fulfilled?

“Absolutely I am. That’s why I have no regrets. My experiences have helped me to fortify myself to realise my vision and carry forward my mission. I have had chances to get corporate affairs jobs but I turned them down,” he says laughing with contentment.

Nollywood

Though Dejumo admits that Nollywood has impacted positively on film making in Nigeria, he has reservations about the third largest movie making industry in the world. He insists that it was late Alade Aromire that started the Nollywood phenomenon.

“It’s a sour point for me because to begin with, I consider it imprudent and corrupt for a section of the movie industry to take credit for the entire movie industry. They claim to have started home videos with Living in Bondage but that is not true, Aromire started home videos.

“They now claim that they are the ones that established movie making industry forgetting those before them. Now they claim they represent the entire movie making industry and that’s also false. We have other woods like Kannywood and we hear that in the South/South they are also coming up with their own wood. The saddest part is that the government of the day is supporting them. Government should know better.”

Nollywood at 20

One issue Dejumo finds ridiculous is the Nollywood At 20 celebrations.

“They say they are celebrating 20 years of Nollywood and I find it ridiculous. The name Nollywood is part of the pranks if not plans of the cultural imperialists to make nonsense of what we do. They are there just for the money and the money is not even pure. Who are they trying to fool? Imagine a grandchild trying to claim the credit of his grandfather. Even the academia is carried away writing seminars and papers on Nollywood but they are the people who should know better than those in government. I am totally against the name Nollywood.”

Movie Naija

Consequently, Dejumo is calling for a unification of what he terms all the woods in Nigeria under the name Movie Naija.

“I have suggested that we call all the woods together and call them Movie Naija. There is nowhere in the world where Nollywood is not known. That we have Hollywood and Bollywood does not mean we should have Nollywood. We can understand the American model because there is really a physical Hollywood which is the cradle of film making. Where is Nollywood in Nigeria? It has to change for many good reasons.

“Let me quickly add that despite that criticism, Nollywood has brought vibrancy into the motion picture industry. We are now the second in the world.  They have done well; some of the productions are quite good.”

Current project

Dejumo revealed that he is currently writing a book which is based on his masters degree thesis entitled Project Africa: Developing Afrika by Afrikan Peoples.

“I should have presented it on July 28. I planned to but I did not have the funds. I am publishing myself. It’s an expansion of my master’s degree dissertation and thesis on culture and communication.

“In Africa, what we practice is foreign culture. I am very hard on cultural imperialism and I encourage the promotion of our indigenous cultures. Culture is the totality of the people. And so I am pushing for Africans to start looking inwards for solutions to our challenges. We’ve got to handle your development ourselves; Africans and Nigerians. The title of the book is Project Africa: Developing Afrika by Afrikan Peoples.

Dejumo insists that for Africa to develop, Africans have to take charge of their development and stop looking to the West. He says we have to start developing ourselves for ourselves and by ourselves: “It’s all about colonization, neo colonisation and globalization which is imposing foreign cultures on Africans and of course suppressing our development. How can we develop? Culture is the bedrock of any development so without practicing our culture we can’t develop and this is diabolical! Corruption started with colonization and the West colonized us mentally. We are slaves in our motherland.”

70 years after, how would he want to be remembered?

“I don’t know whether it’s my place to say how people should look at my legacy. I think what they should do is look at what I have done critically and make their opinions but I know I am a reformist. In my book I call myself an iconoclast. I want to be remembered for bringing positive change that takes us to the true cause and destiny of humanity.
